About Sarah

In April 2014, I was driving my hour+ commute home from San Jose to Gilroy in Bay Area traffic, after working a nearly 10 hour day. I needed to make it to the daycare center by 6pm to pick up our four girls, ages 4, 2, and 6 month old twins. I was exhausted, but it's when I get home that the work actually began. I had everything I ever wanted, except seemingly myself. I was stressed, overwhelmed, exhausted, and something needed to change. I needed to start running again. It wasn't a matter of whether I had time to run, but that I had to make time to run.

I accepted the notion that I might never be as good as my Division I All-American 800m self, and that would have to be okay. I hadn’t trained for a race in over 10 years. Things were different now. I had different responsibilities and priorities, but I could still enjoy running like I used to - and I could still feel fulfilled and accomplished by setting new goals. I decided to set a goal of training to run a half marathon. So I picked up my girls, went home, fed them and put them to bed. And that night, I dug out a very old pair of running shoes and went for a 3 mile run. And it was hard, and it sucked, and I was really slow. But when I was done, I felt awesome. And I decided I would do it again tomorrow.

Since that day in 2014, I started training and steadily improved year after year. After being 4th at the Marine Corps Marathon in 2016, I went on to win the Marine Corps Marathon in 2017 and qualify for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials later that year. I then turned to triathlon in 2019 after a training injury kept me from running, and earned 2nd Place at the 70.3 World Championships before turning professional in triathlon. After running in the Olympic Marathon Trials in 2020, I embarked on my pro triathlon career and recently earned a spot to compete in the 2022 70.3 World Championships.

I now train as an elite runner and pro triathlete, while coaching full-time under McKirdy Trained. I live with my husband and four girls in Fairfax, Virginia.
